Microdermabrasion - a Non Invasive Solution

By Mats Sumellin

Microdermabrasion is a skin enhancement procedure that is becoming more well known over time. A patient can have this done for relatively little cost, and it is noninvasive and is not painful. It has also been an attractive alternative for those not quite ready for facial injections, laser procedures or cosmetic surgeries.

There is a lot that microdermabrasion can do, including lessening the appearance of age spots (hyperpigmentation), reduce scars, even out rough skin, make pores smaller, and lessen wrinkles and lines on the face. After the process is completed, skin will be able to allow creams to go deeper to have more of an effect to make skin look younger, by promoting the creation of collagen.

Microdermabrasion is a powerful exfoliation performed with special equipment. This process removes the uppermost layer of dead skin cells from the skin.

The crystal microdermabrasion device consists of a compressor that draws in air through a hand-held wand. When the wand touches the skin, a vacuum is created. Dead skin cells are removed from the top layers of the skin as they collide with the aluminum oxide crystals. A separate tube on the wand simply sucks the air along with the dead skin cells and crystals into the machine.

Diamond-tip microdermabrasion uses the same vacuum technology and hand-held wand, but there aren't any crystals moving through the tip. The dead skin cells are removed buy the diamond tip in this technique, and then vacuumed up the same way. There are many different tips with various grades of roughness, chosen specifically for your skin type and condition. The discomfort is slightly increased for a patient using diamond-tips, however, crystal microdermabrasion has the same effect. For sensitive skin, this is the more beneficial option.

The effects of this process are already very striking, and if the technician is skilled and experienced, it is even better. For skin that is rougher, more treatments will be required for the desired effect, and in most cases several treatments are necessary. Depending on the results that you want, your skin's overall condition, the issues that are present and your response to the first treatment a plan of care can be structured. Most people are very pleased with the initial results of their first treatment session, but it may take several sessions to address all of the problems and issues with your complexion. For the treatments to provide long lasting results, every few months a session should be scheduled. Individuals who happen to have very sensitive skin can also benefit from this process, as the device can be set up in order to cater toward their specific skin type.

Side effects do result at times from microdermabrasion, although they are usually minimal from this non-surgical treatment. Some skin trauma does occur at times since it blasts crystals at the skin at a high rate of speed, this does have a reaction but it's not long lasting. Typically, some redness, tightness and very light bruising will occur along with possible sensitivity. This is normal and will only last several hours. Mild abrasions sometimes occur, and at times even a bit of bleeding. Skin microdermabrasion treatments have little risk for clients, require no anaesthesia and there are no harmful chemicals being used on your delicate facial skin. When compared to facial peels that use lasers or chemical agents it is much safer.
